“Indigenous Leader Criticizes Alberta Govt Over Treaty 6 Absence”

Date:

An Indigenous leader in Alberta expressed disappointment with the provincial government for the absence of the Indigenous relations minister at a significant event marking the 150th anniversary of the Treaty 6 signing. Joey Pete, the grand chief of the Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations, emphasized the need for respect and dialogue with the government for true reconciliation to occur.

The commemorative event, organized by the City of Edmonton and Mayor Andrew Knack, featured ceremonies, drumming, dancing, and the raising of the Treaty 6 flag, with participation from various Indigenous leaders, elders, and government officials at all levels. Despite the absence of the Alberta Indigenous Relations Minister, Rajan Sawhney, other dignitaries, including federal Emergency Management Minister Eleanor Olszewski and Conservative member of Parliament Billy Morin, delivered speeches and exchanged gifts.

In response to the criticism, Sawhney’s office stated that she was away but remains committed to maintaining strong relationships with Indigenous communities. The press secretary highlighted the significance of the anniversary and assured continued engagement with Treaty 6 First Nations and Indigenous leaders.

However, Joey Pete expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s focus on issues like pipelines instead of prioritizing reconciliation and equity for Indigenous communities. He stressed the importance of collaboration with the government to address these concerns.

The event in Edmonton is part of a series of activities planned to commemorate the Treaty 6 anniversary, with more events scheduled throughout the week. The signing of Treaty 6, which encompasses central Alberta and central Saskatchewan, initially took place in Fort Carlton, Saskatchewan, on August 23, 1876. Additional commemorative events are set to occur at Fort Carlton this weekend.
