In a recent study, researchers have confirmed that Canada’s last epishelf lake, characterized by freshwater floating on saltwater, has disappeared. The Milne Fiord epishelf lake on Ellesmere Island in Nunavut, described as a unique ecosystem, has been lost due to the warming climate-induced transformation in the Arctic.
The lead author of the study, Jérémie Bonneau from Laval University, expressed sadness over the loss, emphasizing that the lake’s sudden drainage resulted in the extinction of all life forms inhabiting it. The irreversible disappearance of this once prevalent phenomenon signifies a significant shift in the region’s environmental dynamics, marking the end of a 4000-year era.
While previous reports had indicated the lake’s demise, the new study, recently published in Scientific Reports, offers detailed insights into the events leading to its disappearance. The investigation highlights how the Milne Ice Shelf’s collapse in 2020, off the coast of Ellesmere Island, ultimately led to the lake’s vanishing.
Epishelf lakes form when freshwater accumulates on top of denser saltwater, creating a distinct layer due to the difference in density. The Milne Fiord lake had been dammed by the Milne Ice Shelf for millennia, preserving its freshwater layer. Researchers discovered two distinct ecosystems coexisting within the lake, separated by a mere 20 centimeters.
The loss of the epishelf lake has had a profound impact on the surrounding environment, disrupting the unique biodiversity it sustained.
