The Montreal Roses secured a 2-0 victory against AFC Toronto in Northern Super League play on Sunday, with Marie-Yasmine Alidou netting the winning goal from a penalty kick in the 55th minute. Elyse Bennett extended the lead with her ninth goal of the season, providing insurance for the Roses (9-4-3) who were under the guidance of interim head coach Maryse Bard-Martel for the first time.
Despite Shelina Zadorsky seemingly equalizing for Toronto (7-5-4) in the 68th minute, the goal was disallowed due to an offside ruling. Roses’ goalkeeper Anna Karpenko made a remarkable performance, facing 20 shots, nine of which were on target, to secure a clean sheet.
On the other end, Toronto’s goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo faced seven shots, five of which were on target. This match marked the Roses’ first game following the dismissal of head coach Robert Rositoiu, who was let go after a surprising 1-0 defeat to semi-pro team Simcoe County in the W Canadian Championship.
