German authorities are probing a drone carrying explosives and a detonator discovered at Leipzig airport, as Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov hints at Moscow’s plans to escalate retaliation against nations aiding Ukraine. Lavrov, speaking with VGTRK, Russia’s state media, emphasized the intention to employ more aggressive tactics to dismantle support for Kyiv’s military efforts.
The drone, equipped with an unknown explosive, was found by an airport employee in the cargo operations area near Leipzig’s south runway, a site classified as “critical infrastructure.” Leipzig serves as a key NATO airport facilitating the transport of weaponry, ammunition, and military supplies to Ukraine via flights operated by Ukrainian cargo firms.
The presence of the drone, located next to a Ukrainian cargo plane, signifies a heightened threat level for Germany, according to the country’s interior minister, Alexander Dobrindt. He described the incident as part of a sophisticated “professional hybrid threat scenario,” ruling out amateur involvement.
German authorities are investigating the origin of the drone and have refrained from attributing responsibility. However, U.S. intelligence sources informed the Wall Street Journal that the drone likely belonged to the Russian government, prompting cautious yet proactive measures from Berlin to bolster anti-drone capabilities.
Dobrindt highlighted ongoing Russian activities, including the use of drones, espionage, sabotage, and influence operations across Europe, particularly in light of the upcoming regional elections in Germany. He emphasized the evolving nature of threats faced by Germany, stressing the need for vigilance and readiness to counter hostile actions.
The Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) has been monitoring Russia’s online interference in Germany, citing a campaign named Operation Overload aimed at exploiting tensions within NATO member states and Ukraine. Dobrindt acknowledged the existence of disinformation attempts targeting German politics and society, especially during critical events like regional elections.
Hans-Jakob Schindler, from the Counter Extremism Project, warned that Russia’s actions, including the Leipzig drone incident, represent a significant escalation in interference tactics. He raised concerns about the line between defense and direct conflict, questioning the threshold where hybrid warfare transforms into conventional attacks. Lavrov’s statements, according to Schindler, signal a more aggressive stance from Russia towards Europe and NATO.
Schindler urged clarity on boundaries with Russia, emphasizing the need for a firm response to prevent further escalation and potential harm. Lavrov’s remarks, seen as a departure from previous denials, are viewed as a veiled threat and a signal of heightened aggression in Russia’s campaign against Western nations.
