Parts of British Columbia have been severely impacted by drought this summer, leading to water use restrictions in Bessette Creek and temporary protection orders for the Salmon River watershed. The Cowichan Lake Salmonid Enhancement Society in Vancouver Island is experiencing progressively drier conditions in the 16 streams they manage, prompting actions like fry salvage to rescue fish from drying rivers.
Bob Crandall, the society’s treasurer, emphasizes the importance of human intervention in mitigating ecosystem challenges caused by man-made factors. While communities in B.C. support these efforts, experts caution that such interventions have limitations and may not provide a sustainable long-term solution.
Collaborating with the Ts’uubaa-asatx Nation and volunteers, Crandall and his team relocate fish, including salmon, trout, and char, to areas with more water. However, the task is becoming increasingly difficult due to climate change, with streams drying up farther upstream than before.
Efforts involve using aerators, bubblers, and nets to transport fish, a demanding task made more challenging by hot weather conditions. The society has noticed a significant increase in the distance they need to move the fish, requiring more effort and resources.
The Ts’uubaa-asatx Nation plays a crucial role in the fry salvage projects, utilizing drones to identify drying streams and aiding in fish relocation. Their commitment to preserving salmon, a vital resource for the community, reflects a holistic approach to conservation that includes river restoration and ocean conditions.
In France, similar rescue initiatives are facing hurdles due to severe drought and extreme heat events, causing fish relocation efforts to falter. Climate change-induced conditions have led to unprecedented challenges, like fish congregating in small water volumes, intensifying competition and mortality rates.
Jean-Pierre Faure from the Fédération de Pêche du Rhône in France highlighted the inadequacy of traditional management approaches in the face of changing conditions. He stressed the need for ecosystem restoration and sustainable water management practices over short-term interventions like fish relocation, which can be costly and ineffective on a large scale.
Faure emphasized the physiological stress fish endure in warm water conditions and the limitations of rescue fishing in extensively dried watersheds. Instead, a shift towards long-term solutions focusing on ecosystem health and water conservation is crucial to address the escalating challenges faced by aquatic life.
