A recent study reveals that some lake sturgeon in the Great Lakes could be over 400 years old, challenging previous assumptions about their lifespan. These massive, armored fish, reaching up to two meters in length and weighing as much as 180 kilograms, are struggling to survive. In Ontario, lake sturgeon are classified as a species at risk, with their Great Lakes population being endangered.
Decades of data on captured and recaptured lake sturgeon across the Great Lakes were analyzed in the study, indicating a longer recovery process than initially anticipated. Traditional methods of estimating sturgeon age by counting growth rings in their fin rays prove challenging as sturgeon growth slows with age. Instead, researchers tracked individual sturgeon growth over time to model their age and discovered some could live for centuries.
This unexpected finding poses significant implications for conservation efforts, particularly for Trevor Pitcher, a biologist at the University of Windsor. The current conservation plan, spanning a century, may need adjustments if sturgeon indeed have such long lifespans. Sturgeon play a crucial role in the ecosystem by controlling invasive species populations, and efforts are being made to rebuild sturgeon populations around the Great Lakes.
For Perry McLeod-Shabogesic, an elder from Nipissing First Nation, lake sturgeon hold cultural significance beyond their ecological impact. Considered “grandfather fish” due to their longevity, sturgeon are revered as elders in Anishinaabe tradition. Their existence dates back millions of years, but human activities have drastically reduced their numbers. McLeod-Shabogesic emphasizes the unique nature of sturgeon, describing them as beings that exist in between categories, embodying a special significance in Indigenous teachings.
Incorporating the newfound understanding of sturgeon lifespans, conservation strategies may require reevaluation to ensure the long-term survival of these ancient creatures.
