In a social media post just before imposing new tariffs on Canadian goods, Trump announced a temporary halt on tariffs and a “deal” with Canada. He specifically mentioned the Keystone XL Pipeline, which had been discontinued by his predecessor, Joe Biden, hinting at a possible resurrection of the project.
While former executive Dennis McConaghy sees Trump’s signal as a potential bargaining chip for Prime Minister Mark Carney, others like Carlo Dade caution that reviving the project will face significant political and environmental challenges. Despite Trump’s enthusiasm, there are doubts about the feasibility of moving forward with the Keystone XL pipeline given the current market conditions and political landscape.
South Bow Corporation, the owner of the Keystone Pipeline System, has not commented on Trump’s remarks. The company is currently collaborating with Bridger Pipeline on the Prairie Connector project, which could significantly boost Canada’s crude oil exports to the U.S. if completed.
Although Trump’s interest in reviving the Keystone XL project has been met with skepticism, the potential impact on the oil industry remains uncertain. The Prairie Connector project, if realized, could provide substantial value and address the growing demand for Canadian crude in the U.S. market.
