“Prince George Woman Believes She Inspired Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene'”

Date:

A woman from Prince George speculates that she might have been the muse behind Dolly Parton’s classic song, “Jolene.” Juline Whelan encountered the renowned singer in 1972 and seems to fit the description of the young girl that inspired the track’s title.

During an interview with a Norwegian TV show in 2008, Dolly Parton recounted how she encountered a little girl named Jolene who left a lasting impression on her during her early career. It was this encounter that sparked the idea for the iconic song.

Whelan, who was just 10 years old at the time, met Dolly Parton at a country music concert at Disneyland in 1972. She vividly recalls approaching the singer for an autograph after being moved by Parton’s performance of “Coat of Many Colors.”

Years later, Whelan came across a TV movie about Dolly Parton’s life in 2015, prompting her to delve into the origins of the song “Jolene.” After researching, she discovered the interview where Parton described meeting a red-haired, green-eyed girl named Jolene, leading Whelan to connect the dots.

The uncanny resemblance between Whelan and the description of the girl named Jolene further fueled her belief that she might be the inspiration behind the song. Whelan’s frequent encounters of people mistakenly calling her “Jolene” added to the intrigue.

While the song “Jolene” was inspired by a child, its narrative delves into more mature themes of love and jealousy. Parton has disclosed that aspects of the song were influenced by real-life events, including encounters with a flirtatious bank teller who took an interest in her husband.

Despite facing teasing from peers and colleagues who would sing the song to her, Whelan has come to appreciate the song’s artistry over the years. She now embraces being linked to one of pop culture’s iconic characters, even hoping for a reunion with Dolly Parton during her upcoming Vancouver performance.

For Whelan, the possibility of meeting Parton once more leaves her speechless, reflecting her enduring admiration for the singer and the timeless ballad that has become a part of her own story.
