Amy Haynes recounted an incident where they had to call an ambulance for her three-year-old son, Nolan, who had a severe fever exceeding 40°C. Despite being informed at a local clinic that immediate emergency care was necessary due to the risk of seizures, the family encountered a roadblock when all hospitals in Saskatoon, North Battleford, and Swift Current reported no available beds.
Frustrated by the lack of options, Haynes expressed her disappointment at the situation, emphasizing the difficulty in accessing timely care. The only feasible solution was a lengthy two-and-a-half-hour ambulance journey to Prince Albert, incurring a hefty price tag of over $1,300 for a one-way trip. Despite anticipating the bill, receiving it in the mail was still disheartening for Haynes, who felt it was unjust that they had to travel such a distance due to bed shortages.
Nolan, diagnosed with a form of pneumonia, received treatment in Prince Albert for several days before being discharged. The story of the family’s ordeal was brought to light by the provincial Opposition NDP during a news conference in Biggar, underscoring the critical importance of accessible emergency services in rural areas. The NDP MLA, Keith Jorgenson, highlighted the potential life-threatening consequences of delays in reaching medical facilities, stressing the need for adequate healthcare infrastructure.
The government’s response to the situation included plans to enhance hospital capacity in Saskatoon by adding 146 beds. However, it was clarified that ambulance services are not covered under the Canada Health Act, and there is no insurance coverage for ambulance transfers between hospitals.
