Defence Minister David McGuinty is set to reveal next week in the United Kingdom that Canada will participate in an international initiative to develop the next generation of stealth fighter jets, according to sources at CBC News. Canada has secured a position as an “observer” in the Global Combat Air Program, joining partners like the U.K., Japan, and Italy in the project aimed at creating a sixth-generation fighter jet by 2035.
Retired lieutenant-general Christopher Coates, a former top NORAD commander, emphasized the importance of Canada’s involvement in the program, highlighting the need to prevent the neglect of its defense industry and strategic defense capabilities. Canada is currently evaluating the acquisition of 88 F-35s from the U.S., a decision prompted by concerns over potential annexation threats and tariffs impacting Canadian industries under former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Joining the international fighter jet development program is seen as a proactive step towards preparing for future defense needs, distinct from the F-35 acquisition. Lt.-Gen. Jamie Speiser-Blanchet, commander of the Royal Canadian Air Force, is engaging with counterparts from the U.K., Japan, and Italy ahead of major airshows. McGuinty will also participate in the Farnborough International Airshow, where a signing ceremony is expected to formalize Canada’s observer status in the program.
