Legendary Flames Announcer Peter Maher Dies at 79

Renowned Calgary Flames radio announcer Peter Maher has passed away at the age of 79. Maher, who served as the team’s play-by-play commentator for radio broadcasts for 33 consecutive seasons starting in 1980, was known for his iconic catchphrases like “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!” His illustrious career included calling the Flames’ Stanley Cup victory in 1989 and their finals appearance in 2004 before retiring at the end of the 2013-14 NHL season.

The Flames expressed their condolences to Maher’s friends, family, and fans, acknowledging his significant contribution to the team and the community. Maher was remembered as a passionate ambassador for the Flames whose warmth, generosity, and love for the game touched many lives.

Originally from Campbellton, New Brunswick, Maher previously called Toronto Maple Leafs games before joining the Flames in 1980 when the team relocated from Atlanta. Throughout his career, Maher also covered six NHL All-Star games, the 2005 IIHF World Championship, and the Canadian men’s hockey team’s games at the 2010 Winter Olympics, including Sidney Crosby’s iconic “Golden Goal.”

Maher was honored with induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006, receiving the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for his outstanding work as an NHL broadcaster. Following his retirement, the broadcast booth at the Scotiabank Saddledome was named in his honor, and he inspired an annual award presented by Calgary media to the Flames player exemplifying sincerity, integrity, dedication, and respect.
