Jurors were presented with an audio recording of Duane (Keffe D) Davis recounting in a 2008 police interview that his nephew Orlando (Baby Lane) Anderson was the one who shot and killed rapper Tupac Shakur. Davis, who claimed to have been in the car with Anderson during the incident, is facing charges for allegedly orchestrating the 1996 murder of the 25-year-old hip-hop icon in Las Vegas. Anderson had already passed away ten years prior to the interview.
According to Davis, the white Cadillac he and Anderson were in, along with two other individuals, pulled up next to a vehicle carrying Shakur and hip-hop mogul Marion (Suge) Knight. Davis mentioned that he was prepared to shoot but couldn’t due to Knight’s position, so he passed the gun to Deandre “Big Dre” Smith, who declined. Subsequently, Anderson took the weapon and opened fire, as detailed in the audio played for the jurors.
This conversation marked the first time Davis openly discussed his role in the shooting with law enforcement, a crucial piece of evidence in the prosecution’s case against the 63-year-old. Prosecutors emphasized that they would heavily rely on Davis’s own statements made during police interviews, podcasts, and his 2019 memoir, “Compton Street Legend.”
Davis, who pleaded not guilty, has been criticized by his lawyer for fabricating his involvement, labeling the prosecution’s account as fiction. Davis was initially a suspect in the unsolved 1997 shooting of Shakur’s rival, the Notorious B.I.G., but was later cleared. The detectives who interviewed Davis assured him of confidentiality, but prosecutors argue that his subsequent disclosures invalidate any prior agreements.
Allegations suggest that Shakur’s murder was in retaliation for an earlier altercation between Shakur’s entourage and Anderson at the MGM Grand, following a Mike Tyson fight. In his memoir, Davis recounted witnessing Shakur hanging out of a black BMW before the fatal shooting. Despite his untimely demise, Shakur’s legacy endures as a revered figure in music and entertainment, continuing to influence generations even decades after his passing.
