The top official leading the RCMP in British Columbia has been removed from his position due to undisclosed allegations spanning from 2016 to 2018, as stated by the RCMP. Dwayne McDonald, who previously held the role of deputy commissioner and commanding officer of the B.C. RCMP, has been succeeded by John Brewer, the former head of B.C.’s extortion task force.
In a statement attributed to RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme, it was mentioned that further information regarding the allegations will not be disclosed at this time. Duheme reassured that the allegations are being investigated but emphasized that there will be no disruptions to RCMP operations or policing services in the province.
McDonald, who served as the top official at the Surrey RCMP and as the RCMP’s criminal operations officer overseeing federal and organized crime investigations in British Columbia, has had his biography removed from the RCMP’s senior executive committee page. A 2024 bio highlighted his extensive law enforcement experience spanning nearly three decades, including previous work at the Canada Border Services Agency.
John Brewer, now serving as the acting commanding officer of the B.C. RCMP and deputy commissioner, was formerly an assistant commissioner with the RCMP. Commissioner Duheme expressed full confidence in Brewer, describing him as a respected member of the RCMP’s senior leadership team.
McDonald had received the Order of Merit of the Police Forces in 2015 for his contributions. The B.C. RCMP, known as E Division, is the largest of the RCMP’s 15 divisions. Brewer, who previously led B.C.’s extortion task force, has now assumed the role of top official for the B.C. RCMP on an interim basis.
