Roblox, the renowned gaming platform, is experiencing a significant decline in its financial performance. Over the past year, the company has witnessed a staggering loss of approximately $97.5 billion Cdn in market value, as per stock market data. While Roblox attributes this downturn to shifts in user gameplay preferences and challenges in appealing to older gamers, experts suggest there may be more factors at play.
Aaron Langille, who oversees the game design and simulation program at Cambrian College in Sudbury, Ont., remarked, “I think there’s actually a lot of things going on. I think it’s sort of a platform getting a little bit older, and maybe making some decisions that didn’t work out.”
The stock price of Roblox Corporation has plummeted by around 70 percent compared to the same period last year, dropping from $129.63 US ($180.67 Cdn) to $36.96 US ($51.51 Cdn). This decline accelerated following an earnings call where executives disclosed revenue figures below company expectations.
For those unfamiliar with Roblox, it is a gaming and creation platform where users can engage with games developed by other users. Launched in 2006, the platform boasts 151.5 million daily users and 3.5 million game developers, as stated by company data. The diverse array of games on Roblox includes racing games, obstacle courses, first-person shooters, platformers, and board games, with most being multiplayer experiences.
The majority of Roblox gamers skew towards a younger demographic. The company, which introduced identity and age verification measures earlier this year, reported that among verified daily active users, 35 percent were under 13 years old and 38 percent were aged 13 to 17, highlighting a significant proportion of non-adult players.
CEO David Baszucki and CFO Naveen Chopra acknowledged falling short of user spending expectations this year, especially among users under 13. They attributed this shortfall to adjustments in the platform’s game recommendation algorithm and the evolution of popular games that are less lucrative compared to previous hits.
Safety concerns have also surfaced regarding Roblox, which facilitates text and voice communication between users. Efforts are underway to broaden the platform’s appeal to older gamers amid mounting worries from governments, watchdogs, and experts regarding the safety of young users. The RCMP’s National Child Exploitation Crime Centre received over 1,000 reports related to Roblox between 2024 and 2025.
In a tragic incident in February 2025, a 16-year-old from Vancouver took her own life after online interactions with a violent group called 764, initially met on Roblox. Public Safety Canada designated 764 as a terrorist entity, citing its exploitation of young individuals for harmful activities.
Roblox has committed to enhancing online safety for young users following an agreement with the state of Nevada. Yulia Nevskaya, an assistant professor of marketing at Queen’s University, emphasized the platform’s ongoing challenges with safety and account verification, potentially impacting user retention and game developer participation.
Despite the financial setbacks, Baszucki and Chopra highlighted positive aspects during the earnings call. They pointed out that changes to Roblox’s algorithm have bolstered user retention and highlighted growth in international markets like Japan and India. Additionally, the diversity in games played has increased, signaling a positive shift in user engagement.
Cristiano Politowski, an assistant professor of computer science at Ontario Tech University, noted Roblox’s unique position in managing its platform and speculated that short-term setbacks may align with a long-term strategy for growth. However, concerns persist over Roblox’s ability to adapt to evolving player preferences and attract new users amidst an aging user base.
