Céline Dion is gearing up for her upcoming five-week residency in Paris next month and has recently opened up about her battle with a rare neurological autoimmune disorder known as stiff person syndrome. The Canadian music icon shared in an exclusive profile with Harper’s Bazaar that she had been experiencing symptoms of the condition for 17 years before receiving a formal diagnosis in 2022.
The pain associated with stiff person syndrome, which intensified in 2020, often left Dion struggling to walk and at times required high doses of Valium for relief. This progressive disorder, affecting only a small fraction of the population, is characterized by muscle rigidity and painful spasms triggered by various stimuli like stress, loud noises, or sudden movements. While there is no definitive cause or approved treatment specific to the condition, management through other therapies is possible.
Before her diagnosis, Dion would attribute show cancellations to minor ailments like coughs or sinus infections, concealing the true extent of her suffering from her fans. Feeling a sense of dishonesty towards her supporters, she eventually halted all performances post-diagnosis to focus on treatment. Despite her hiatus from the stage since the 2024 Paris Olympics, she is determined to make a comeback in September.
Dion’s recovery journey involves a rigorous regimen comprising medication, physical therapy, vocal training, and immunotherapy. Additionally, she dedicates herself to 90-minute Pilates sessions thrice a week and ballet classes twice a week in preparation for her return to live performances.
Describing Dion as constantly in motion and wary of being still for too long due to fear of stiffness, Harper’s reporter Jazmine Hughes highlighted the singer’s resilience and determination. Dion views her ability to perform again as a miraculous opportunity that she cherishes and values greatly.
Expressing a mix of excitement, strength, and nervousness about her impending return, Dion is set to headline 26 concerts as part of her Paris residency from September 12 to May 29 next year. Her unwavering determination and gratitude towards her fans underscore her eagerness to step back into the spotlight.
