“Royal Canadian Legion Welcomes New Generation”

LISTEN | At 100, the Legion pushes for new, younger members:

Visiting the Billy Bishop Legion in Vancouver’s Kitsilano area on a typical Thursday may unveil a surprising scene.

While veterans enjoy drinks in the pub, upstairs, one may find modern yoga mats laid out next to historical military artifacts.

“I come here to stretch, feel connected, and have a sense of belonging,” expressed Hannah, a 37-year-old yoga enthusiast who only disclosed her first name during a recent class setup.

Across Canada, Legions, which traditionally catered to veterans, now aim to engage younger individuals like Hannah by hosting innovative activities, offering affordable meals, and fostering a sense of community. This year, free membership is extended to first-time joiners nationwide in celebration of the Royal Canadian Legion’s centenary.

Volunteers at Legions highlight that prior military service is not a requirement for participation.

“Although I haven’t served, both my grandfather and uncle have military backgrounds in Morocco,” shared Hannah, connecting her visits to her family. “Seeing pictures and hearing stories here feels like home.”

Supporting Veterans, Embracing New Members

Legions have traditionally served as support centers for veterans, hosting Remembrance Day events, community gatherings, and various ceremonies. Nujma Bond, the national spokesperson for the Royal Canadian Legion, emphasized that while the core offerings remain, many branches are evolving successfully.

“This period marks a transition for Legions, where our traditional practices are upheld while we anticipate growth,” noted Bond in an interview with CBC News.

“With a significant influx of new members and fresh ideas, we are energized to enhance and preserve our existing initiatives.”

The Royal Canadian Legion has reported over 100,000 new members in 2026, boosting total membership to over 300,000, as per its national headquarters.
