Concertgoers with floor and lower level seats were kept in the concourse as the venue was still being set up, causing frustration among attendees. The event, originally scheduled for 8 p.m., was delayed to 9 p.m. and eventually began at around 10:45 p.m. Walia emphasized that starting late impacted the overall experience of the show.
This incident in Calgary is not an isolated case, as other high-profile shows have also faced delays this summer. Jay-Z’s final Yankee Stadium show started after midnight due to unforeseen circumstances, while heavy rain led to delays at a Harry Styles concert in Mexico City.
Despite the inconvenience caused by delays, ticket holders have limited rights when it comes to refunds or compensation. Entertainment lawyer Kurt Dahl highlighted that the terms and conditions often stipulate that event details are subject to change, leaving consumers with little recourse in such situations.
Ashish Sharma, from the Consumers Council of Canada, noted that there are no statutory rights for concert delays, emphasizing the importance of timely communication with attendees in case of significant delays. As consumers spend more on live entertainment, the issue of delayed shows raises questions about what concert tickets guarantee and the responsibilities of event organizers.
While ticket contracts may not provide much recourse, public pressure and fan feedback can influence how artists and promoters address delays to protect their reputation. Despite the delays, fans like Walia still appreciate the performances but believe that some form of compensation or acknowledgment from ticket vendors would be appropriate in such situations.
