“Taliban’s Resurgence Leaves Afghan Allies Stranded”

Date:

Five years ago, Abdul Razaq Khan, a former translator and facilitator for Canadian media during the Afghan war, was awoken by a late-night message from a journalist he had guided in Kandahar. Having relocated to Kabul after Canada’s withdrawal from Afghanistan to work for USAID, he was startled by news of the Taliban’s advance on Kabul in the summer of 2021.

Responding to the message with a sense of despair, Khan, now settled in Canada, reflects on the loss of his job, home, and country, grappling with the events that led to the rapid downfall of the government backed by western nations. Escaping on foot just ahead of the Taliban’s onslaught, Khan, like many other Afghans who assisted journalists, military, and aid groups, faced imminent danger.

The Taliban’s resurgence not only displaced hundreds of thousands but also ushered in a repressive regime that marginalized women, stifled media freedom, and enforced strict moral codes through a dedicated ministry. Women, who were a focal point of western initiatives during the conflict, have borne the brunt of the Taliban’s rule, facing escalating violence and a lack of justice, as highlighted by The Zan Times, an advocacy group.

With limited direct intervention to safeguard women’s rights in Afghanistan post-2021, western nations have resorted to diplomatic censure and targeted sanctions. Despite efforts to evacuate high-risk individuals, such as female judges and activists, challenges persist. A recent report by Local Staff International and AfghanEvac assesses the evacuation and resettlement responses of allied nations, revealing shortcomings in their efforts.

While Canada succeeded in resettling 63,000 Afghan refugees, concerns linger for those left behind under Taliban rule. Calls to expand assistance programs resonate, emphasizing the obligation to fulfill promises made to those who assisted NATO forces. The Allied Ledger report serves as a stark reminder of the unfinished task of honoring commitments in this critical chapter of recent history.
