The movie “The Odyssey” continues to show strong performance at the box office, generating $1.1 billion US since its release on July 17. Director Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of the Greek epic now stands as his highest-grossing film to date, surpassing his previous successes like “The Dark Knight Rises” and “The Dark Knight.”
In comparison, “The Dark Knight Rises” earned $1.08 billion US, while “The Dark Knight” reached $1 billion US. Nolan’s 2024 biopic, “Oppenheimer,” fell just short of the billion-dollar mark, amassing around $975 million US in revenue.
Another blockbuster making waves is Sony-Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which exceeded expectations by raking in $1.67 billion US globally after earning $360 million US in its opening weekend on July 31. This performance places it among the highest-grossing films ever, with only “Avengers: Endgame” surpassing $300 million US during its opening weekend in 2019.
“Brand New Day” is currently the highest-grossing movie of 2026, leading the box office ahead of “The Odyssey” and “Toy Story 5.” “The Odyssey” is set to expand its reach with an upcoming release in the lucrative Chinese market, with high expectations for success.
The appeal of Imax technology has contributed significantly to the success of both films, with “The Odyssey” being the first movie entirely shot in Imax format. With $147.3 million US in domestic earnings on Imax screens, the film now holds the record for IMAX’s highest-grossing domestic release.
Hollywood is experiencing a resurgence in box office revenue, with ticket sales for 2026 outpacing the previous year by 18.5%. The industry has seen five movies crossing the $1 billion US mark this year, including “The Odyssey” and “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” Analysts project that summer theatrical revenue will hit $4 billion US, signaling a strong recovery for the entertainment industry since the pandemic.
This positive trend in box office performance bodes well for Hollywood’s recovery, with 2026 shaping up to be a successful year for the movie industry.
