Canadian director Matt Johnson appeared relaxed just four days before his wedding and eight days prior to commencing filming on his upcoming movie. Johnson, casually dressed in a T-shirt and sweatpants, discussed “Tony,” a biopic about the early life of celebrated chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain, with CBC News at Toronto’s Revue Cinema. Despite Bourdain’s posthumous fame following his tragic death in 2018, Johnson expressed comfort in portraying his story, noting he had no prior attachment to Bourdain’s public image.
Initially not planning to make a film about Bourdain, Johnson’s perspective shifted upon meeting actor Dominic Sessa, who plays the lead role in the movie. Their shared views on various issues prompted Johnson to explore them through the film. Sessa, cast at 23, was unfamiliar with Bourdain’s work intentionally, as Johnson aimed to keep him aligned with Bourdain’s early career mindset. The movie, drawing inspiration from Bourdain’s book “Kitchen Confidential,” focuses on a pivotal summer in Provincetown, Mass., where Bourdain began his culinary journey.
By concentrating on Bourdain’s formative years, Johnson sidestepped the pressure of replicating the later, more established Bourdain. He emphasized the narrative’s exploration of Bourdain’s youth, including his relationships and self-perception as he entered adulthood. Johnson highlighted the film’s relatability to Bourdain’s admirers, aiming to offer a deeper understanding of the iconic figure. “Tony” is set to premiere in Canadian theaters on August 14.
The film features Sessa portraying a young Bourdain mentored by a chef played by Antonio Banderas. Johnson emphasized a collaborative connection between himself, Sessa, and Bourdain, aiming to deliver a compelling portrayal of the renowned chef.
