“Dad-Daughter Duo Shines at International Whistling Contest”

Date:

In a delightful turn of events, Ben Shannon, a graphic journalist at CBC and a proud dad residing in Toronto, stumbled upon the existence of an international whistling competition while watching the BBC quiz show “Only Connect.” Intrigued, he promptly signed himself and his youngest daughter, Sumire, up to the Masters of Musical Whistling mailing list after a quick Google search.

Initially viewing the contest as a lighthearted affair, Ben saw it as a perfect opportunity to bond with Sumire over their shared talent for whistling. Little did he know that the competition would take a serious turn, transitioning from a casual activity to a full-fledged pursuit of excellence.

Following a successful audition tape submission, Ben and Sumire found themselves accepted as contestants for the Masters of Musical Whistling competition, which was set to take place in Los Angeles. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Ben sought guidance from Carole Anne Kaufman, also known as the Whistling Diva, who highlighted the need for dedicated practice and performance preparation.

Motivated by the challenge and the opportunity to set a positive example for his daughter, Ben embarked on an intense training regimen, dedicating at least 20 minutes daily to honing their whistling skills. With determination and perseverance, they eventually found themselves standing on the grand stage of the 2023 Master of Musical Whistling competition in Hollywood.

Surrounded by a diverse array of talented contestants from around the globe, Ben and Sumire marveled at the skill and passion on display. Witnessing performances that ranged from sublime duets to elaborate renditions of musical compositions, they were inspired by the genuine artistry of their fellow whistlers.

As they took to the stage, Ben and Sumire delivered captivating performances that earned them accolades in their respective categories. Sumire’s rendition of the theme from “Doraemon” secured her a silver medal in the kids’ category, while Ben’s spirited performance of “It’s Not a Moon” by Bad Lip Reading clinched a gold medal in the level one adults category.

Reflecting on the experience, Ben acknowledged the transformative power of shedding irony and embracing genuine passion and dedication. Despite his lingering ’90s teen persona, he discovered the joy of wholeheartedly pursuing something he cared about, culminating in a victorious and heartwarming moment at the Masters of Musical Whistling competition.

The journey from casual participation to competitive success served as a poignant reminder that embracing sincerity and authenticity can lead to unexpected and fulfilling outcomes, showcasing the importance of being true to oneself in the pursuit of one’s passions.
