A grand jury in Los Angeles County has formally charged Nick Reiner with murder in the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. The indictment includes the accusation that he deliberately waited for the right moment to attack them.
The grand jury, meeting discreetly, issued the indictment on July 20, which was made public on Wednesday. Nick Reiner, aged 32, entered a plea of not guilty. The tragic incident occurred on December 14 when the well-known Hollywood director, Rob Reiner, and his wife, photographer Michele Singer Reiner, were fatally stabbed in their residence in the affluent Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. Nick Reiner was apprehended shortly after the incident and formally charged two days later.
This indictment signifies a significant progression towards a trial and enables prosecutors to bypass the preliminary hearing phase in California, where evidence is typically presented publicly. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman expressed his dismay, describing the act as a severe betrayal by someone who was close and trusted by the victims.
The unsealed indictment, though not revealing many new details, indicates that Reiner could face the death penalty due to the lying-in-wait allegation and other circumstances. However, prosecutors have yet to confirm whether they will pursue this penalty. The indictment mentions the use of a knife in the killings, a method previously reported by authorities.
Several crucial aspects surrounding the case, such as motives behind the crime, remain undisclosed to the public. The Los Angeles County chief medical examiner expressed a desire to release the autopsy reports but has been restrained by a court order.
Amidst these legal proceedings, Reiner is reportedly seeking access to funds from a trust established by his parents for his defense. The trust, valued at a minimum of $1.5 million US, has allegedly been withheld from Reiner without valid legal reasons by the trustees overseeing it. Reiner’s petition asserts that the details of what happened to his parents are not pertinent to the trust dispute.
In an effort to bolster his defense, Reiner is aiming to rehire prominent criminal defense attorney Alan Jackson. A hearing regarding this matter is scheduled for the upcoming week. The L.A. County Public Defender’s Office, representing Reiner, declined to comment on the indictment.
California prosecutors have the option to pursue a case through a preliminary hearing or opt for a grand jury process conducted in secrecy. Reiner’s case falls under the latter category, similar to high-profile cases like Harvey Weinstein’s prosecution in Los Angeles.
Rob Reiner, a celebrated actor turned director, left behind a legacy of iconic films from the 1980s and ’90s. His son Nick Reiner, who co-wrote the script for the movie “Being Charlie” with him, shared a close bond with his father. The family tragedy has been devastating for Nick’s siblings and loved ones.
The grief and complexity surrounding this case continue to unfold as legal proceedings progress.
