Canadian filmmaker Ally Pankiw announced on Thursday that she declined an offer to direct the upcoming Harry Potter television series, citing opposition to supporting transphobia. Pankiw shared a screenshot on Instagram where she unequivocally rejected the opportunity to work on the HBO production.
In her post, Pankiw emphasized the ease of rejecting funding that promotes transphobia. She clarified that her refusal was for a directing role, not acting. Known for her work on projects like Black Mirror and Feel Good, Pankiw, 39, has established herself as a talented director.
The new Harry Potter series, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is scheduled for release on HBO Max on December 25, 2026. Based on J.K. Rowling’s iconic book series, the show will stream on Crave in Canada. Rowling’s controversial views on transgender issues have sparked criticism in recent years, with the author defending her stance in various public statements and actions.
Fellow director Kate Herron also shared her decision to decline involvement in the Harry Potter series, expressing solidarity with Pankiw. Herron, recognized for her work on Loki and other popular series, commended Pankiw for her stance.
As inquiries into the refusals made by directors circulate, Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of HBO, has yet to provide a response. Additionally, Pankiw’s representatives have not commented on the specifics of the text exchange shared by the filmmaker. The trend of professionals declining work on the series highlights the ongoing controversy surrounding Rowling’s views within the Harry Potter franchise.
