“Saskatchewan Company Drills for Game-Changing Natural Hydrogen”

A company in Saskatchewan is currently engaged in drilling operations to extract hydrogen from underground at a commercial scale, aiming to demonstrate its viability as an alternative to hydrogen produced from fossil fuels. Regina-based Max Power Mining recently initiated drilling at the Lawson Complex in southern Saskatchewan, marking their third well at this location. The company envisions establishing the world’s first large-scale commercial natural hydrogen system, which could potentially serve as a new primary energy source.

According to Chad Levesque, the company’s president, hydrogen plays a crucial role in various industrial processes, such as ammonia production, petroleum refining, and transitioning towards cleaner energy sources. Natural hydrogen, if successfully harnessed, could offer a more environmentally friendly means of sourcing this essential molecule.

Hydrogen, a versatile gas used for power generation and fuel applications, emits only water vapor when burned, making it a clean energy option. The current predominant method of producing hydrogen involves energy-intensive processes that result in significant carbon emissions. Grey hydrogen, derived from fossil fuels, accounts for over 80% of the hydrogen produced globally, contributing to substantial CO2 emissions.

In contrast, green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis using renewable energy sources, offers a cleaner alternative but is still not cost-competitive with grey hydrogen. Natural hydrogen, also known as white hydrogen, presents a unique advantage as it can be extracted directly from underground deposits with relatively lower greenhouse gas emissions, potentially leading to more cost-effective pricing.

The process of extracting natural hydrogen involves utilizing existing equipment and techniques similar to those used in natural gas and helium extraction. However, specialized techniques are required due to the unique properties of hydrogen compared to traditional oil and gas drilling methods.

Natural hydrogen originates from natural processes like serpentinization and radioactive decay, resulting in the release of hydrogen underground. While rich deposits of natural hydrogen are considered rare due to its volatility, recent discoveries in Canada, including Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia, have sparked interest in exploring this energy source further.

The challenges associated with extracting natural hydrogen include the need to determine the feasibility of extraction, the volume of available hydrogen, and the efficiency of production. Companies like Max Power are conducting exploratory drilling to evaluate the potential for commercial-scale natural hydrogen extraction and are expected to release data as their projects progress.

Though the development of natural hydrogen as a viable energy source is still in its early stages globally, ongoing research and exploration efforts aim to assess its potential impact on decarbonization initiatives. Everts emphasized the significance of continued research to determine the commercial viability and environmental benefits of natural hydrogen.
