A recent report by consumer advocate Which? reveals that several major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations for reliable service. The study indicates that smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing larger brands by offering faster speeds, more dependable connections, and better value for money.
The research highlights that internet connection issues, such as frequent dropouts, slow download speeds, and service outages, are common complaints among consumers. An overwhelming 91% of broadband customers reported facing problems with their service in the past year, indicating that only a small fraction of households enjoyed trouble-free connectivity.
Sky emerged as one of the worst performers for frequent dropouts, with 38% of customers experiencing this issue. Similarly, Virgin Media faced criticism for regular connection dropouts despite the high costs of their broadband plans. Dissatisfaction with slow download speeds was expressed by around a quarter of Virgin Media users.
Among dissatisfied customers, Sky users were notably displeased with the speed of their broadband service. Other underperforming providers included TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service.
On the positive side, smaller UK providers like Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic received praise for offering more reliable services compared to major brands. Plusnet also stood out among larger providers, outperforming competitors like Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.
These findings align with previous Which? research, demonstrating that smaller broadband companies consistently excel in reliability, customer service, and value for money compared to major providers in the UK.
Which? is encouraging households to explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching if they are dissatisfied with their current service. To check available broadband networks, consumers can use Ofcom’s broadband checker tool.
In response to the report, a spokesperson from Virgin Media defended the company’s services, highlighting significant investments to enhance customer experience. They cited official data from Ofcom and independent rankings from Opensignal to support the claim that Virgin Media offers top-notch broadband services in the UK.
