Donald Trump’s special envoy, Paolo Zampolli, has urged both the US President and FIFA to consider replacing Iran with Italy in the upcoming World Cup. Zampolli, who hails from Italy, believes that Italy, with its rich footballing history and four titles, deserves a spot in the tournament. This suggestion was personally discussed with Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
The proposal comes in the wake of Italy’s disappointing defeat in a play-off match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, leading to widespread disappointment in the country. Zampolli’s initiative is seen as a way to offer Italy a chance at the World Cup while sidelining Iran, a nation currently at odds with the US.
The move is also seen as an attempt to mend relations between Trump and Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni following tensions arising from Trump’s criticisms of Pope Leo XIV over the Iran conflict. Trump had previously expressed concerns about the safety of Iranian players traveling to the US, although he had indicated they would be welcome.
FIFA has not issued a statement regarding the potential replacement of Iran, with Infantino affirming that the Iranian team is expected to participate. Despite ongoing conflicts in Iran and the tournament drawing near, uncertainties persist regarding Iran’s involvement in the World Cup.
Trump has not revisited the topic of Iran’s participation in the US-hosted event since his earlier statements in March. The situation remains fluid as the football world awaits further developments in the lead-up to the World Cup.
