Fernando Alonso is rumored to be considering a return to Alpine, his former team, amid Aston Martin’s ongoing struggles in Formula 1. Although Alonso initially expressed a desire to finish his career with Aston Martin, speculation is swirling in the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix paddock about a potential switch.
Alonso, who turns 45 in July, has had three previous stints with the Enstone-based team, winning consecutive drivers’ championships in 2005 and ’06 when they were known as Renault. Recent periods with the team have been less successful, but there are talks of a possible reunion as Flavio Briatore, Alonso’s manager, is reportedly open to welcoming him back.
However, a move back to Alpine would mean breaking his current agreement with Aston Martin. Despite nearing the end of his racing career, Alonso is expected to take on an ambassadorial role with Aston Martin post-retirement, keeping him involved with F1 for years to come.
While Aston Martin was aiming to make strides this season towards the front of the grid, their performance has faltered, partly due to a challenging start with their new engine partnership with Honda.
In contrast, Alpine has shown improvement this year after finishing last in the 2025 constructors’ championship. With Briatore back in charge and Mercedes engines powering them, Alpine is currently performing well, ranking fifth as the leading midfield team in 2026.
Alonso seems optimistic at his home race in Barcelona, where he last won in 2013. However, he hinted that this could be his final F1 race at Montmelo as he contemplates his future in the sport post-summer.
