EU Implements New Pet Travel Rules for UK Residents

Date:

New regulations in the European Union may result in pet owners facing challenges when traveling with their beloved animals across borders starting tomorrow. Significant adjustments to the requirements for taking dogs, cats, and ferrets from England, Scotland, or Wales into the EU have been implemented post-Brexit. Previously, individuals could utilize EU pet passports for their pets when traveling by various means of transport, but this option is no longer valid due to the enforcement of EU Regulation 2016/429, also known as the Animal Health Law.

Under the new rules, travelers departing from Great Britain to an EU nation with a pet must obtain an animal health certificate (AHC) before their journey. This certificate must be issued by a veterinarian within 10 days of the trip, with a new certificate necessary for each travel instance between Britain and the EU. The AHC can be used for up to six months for travel within the EU and reentry to Britain as long as the rabies vaccinations are up-to-date.

According to the UK government website, the changes also extend to assistance dogs. It states that individuals living in England, Scotland, or Wales are prohibited from using pet passports from April 22 onwards. Pet passports will only be issued to EU residents, not holiday home owners or seasonal visitors. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs advises checking specific pet travel requirements of individual EU member states before embarking on the journey. However, British travelers can still utilize EU pet passports for their return trips to the UK.

Exceptions may apply for pets traveling for competitions, events, or training purposes. The Animal and Plant Health Agency reassures pet owners that holidays with their pets are still feasible despite the new regulations. To ensure a smooth journey, pet owners residing in Great Britain should obtain an Animal Health Certificate if traveling to an EU country.
