In a remarkable turnaround, a historically significant coastal lido narrowly escaped development into residential flats only to evolve into a pet-friendly destination.
Located in the vibrant seaside town of Brighton, Saltdean Lido, an impressive Art Deco swimming pool established in 1937, faced closure and potential redevelopment until a dedicated campaign preserved its heritage as a swimming facility.
Following an extensive restoration effort, the £11 million refurbishment unveiled in 2024 showcased Saltdean Lido’s transformation into the UK’s sole Grade II* listed coastal lido, retaining many original 1930s elements.
The renovation encompassed the refurbishment of the lido’s amenities, including the café, library, ballroom, and offices. Beyond the 40-meter outdoor pool, the lido now boasts spaces for relaxation, yoga, live music, a gym, sauna, exercise classes, and event venues for weddings.
Operating from May 1 to September 10 during the summer and with reduced hours in winter, Saltdean Lido’s most anticipated period is Dogtember—an autumn event allowing dog owners to swim with their pets on selected weekends. The upcoming Dogtember sessions on September 12-13 and October 3-4 are expected to sell out rapidly.
Funded by the National Lottery and community contributions, the lido’s revival has been met with enthusiasm from visitors and volunteers alike, with one tour guide expressing delight at the restored Grade II*-listed facility.
Situated just outside Brighton’s bustling city center, Saltdean offers a tranquil coastal village ambiance, characterized by shingle shores, towering white cliffs, green spaces like Saltdean Park, and access to the scenic Sussex Downs countryside. The locale features a quaint high street with boutique shops, tearooms, and outlets offering traditional fish and chips for a leisurely promenade experience.
