Police in a North Carolina town rushed to Leinbach Park following a planned altercation that turned into a mass shooting, resulting in two fatalities. Numerous youths were reportedly involved in the altercation, which also caused multiple injuries. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NC SBI) classified the incident, occurring around 9:52 am local time, as a mass shooting with two confirmed deaths.
While the Winston-Salem police have not yet disclosed the exact number of victims, the NC SBI stated that “several people” sustained gunshot wounds. The NC SBI alerted the public about the ongoing situation on Robinhood Road near Jefferson Middle School through a Facebook post, emphasizing that the shooting occurred at Leinbach Park and not at the school, which is operating normally.
Authorities have advised against using personal drones in the area to prevent interference with emergency operations. Police drones are actively assisting in the search for individuals involved in the incident. Law enforcement has identified and located several individuals, including victims and suspects, but given the scale of the incident, efforts are ongoing to verify everyone’s status. The Winston-Salem Police Department revealed that some of those involved are minors.
Preliminary investigations indicate that a premeditated altercation among several young individuals at the park escalated into a shootout, resulting in multiple casualties. The suspects involved in the shooting are still at large. The police continue to conduct a thorough investigation near Leinbach Park on Sally Kirk Rd, where the shooting originated earlier in the day. A substantial police presence remains in the area as the investigation unfolds.
Although nearby schools are operating normally, community members are urged to steer clear of the area to facilitate the work of emergency responders. Authorities have encouraged the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to ensure community safety.
