“UK to Phase Out Copper Landlines by January 2027”

Date:

The era of traditional copper landlines in the UK is drawing to a close as the country gears up for a complete shift to “Digital Voice” services by January 2027. This move signifies the end of the outdated copper-wire phone network that has long been in place.

After the deadline passes, households will transition to making calls through their broadband connections. This shift is considered one of the most significant changes in UK communications in many years. To expedite the move away from aging infrastructure, BT’s Openreach network is actively implementing its “Stop Sell” initiative.

Under this initiative, major service providers like BT, Sky, Plusnet, and TalkTalk will no longer be allowed to offer new copper-based broadband and phone services in affected regions. The implementation of Stop Sell notifications has already been underway in various parts of the UK, with further expansion now affecting around 1.69 million premises across 238 exchange locations.

With these changes taking effect, customers seeking to upgrade, switch, or acquire new services will need to transition to full fibre broadband and digital phone services instead of relying on the old copper network. Openreach has clarified that the Stop Sell strategy is activated when a majority (75%) of premises connected to a specific exchange have access to ultrafast Full Fibre. This necessitates customers to opt for a new digital service over the Full Fibre network.

By early June, Stop Sell regulations will be enforced in 1,432 exchanges nationwide, impacting approximately 14.2 million properties. James Lilley, the Managed Customer Migrations Director at Openreach, emphasized the importance of the Stop Sell program in driving the UK towards a modern full fibre future. The goal is to shift customers to more advanced, future-proof technologies as the capability of copper for modern communications diminishes.

The phasing out of legacy copper-based services in areas where fibre is readily available aims to facilitate a smoother transition to faster and more reliable digital infrastructure. This approach not only streamlines the process for customers and providers but also reduces the complexities and costs associated with maintaining both old and new networks in preparation for the eventual nationwide shutdown of the legacy copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), which is less than eight months away.
