“Heineken to Invest £44M in UK Pubs, Create 850 Jobs”

Date:

Heineken has announced a plan to invest over £44 million in numerous pubs across the UK. The large Dutch brewing company aims to enhance 647 pubs within its 2,350-strong Star Pubs estate this year. Part of the investment will focus on renovating 108 pubs with costs exceeding £145,000, leading to the creation of approximately 850 job opportunities.

The refurbishment initiative will concentrate on creating distinct sections for drinking, dining, and sports or entertainment activities, with a special emphasis on sports-themed venues in preparation for the upcoming World Cup. Additionally, Heineken will introduce a new modern pub concept tailored to attract a younger adult demographic. This model will transition from offering morning coffee and workspaces during the day to featuring DJs, open-mic sessions, and live music in the evenings.

Most of the pubs involved in the program are owned by Heineken but are operated independently by licensees. The company has already injected £328 million into British pubs since 2018, initiating work in 52 locations and reopening eight boarded-up pubs.

The investment initiative comes at a challenging time for the pub industry, facing escalating costs, reduced consumer spending, and higher National Insurance employer contributions. To alleviate some of these financial pressures, pubs have received additional business rates support from the Government.

Lawson Mountstevens, the Managing Director of Star Pubs, has called on the government to ease the tax burden on pubs, emphasizing the importance of continuous investment in these social hubs. He stressed the necessity for comprehensive reform of business rates and reduced taxation, including VAT and beer duty, to ensure the sustainability and growth of pubs.

Heineken’s investment is not only aimed at enhancing pub experiences but also at creating flexible job opportunities across communities and providing young individuals with valuable work experience.
