Teachers in the UK may face challenges with fuel shortages and rising petrol prices, prompting calls for them to receive key worker fuel cards, according to the head of an academy trust. Tom Campbell, CEO of E-ACT overseeing 38 schools and 3,500 staff, highlighted concerns about escalating costs for free school meals, citing it as a significant risk to school budgets that could potentially lead to teacher strikes over pay.
Campbell urged the government to prioritize teachers during the ongoing Middle East conflict, emphasizing the impact on various budget aspects for schools and trusts. He noted the substantial increase in energy prices, with gas nearly doubling since February and electricity costs also surging. Energy expenses for a large multi-academy trust managing over 30 schools could reach £3 million to £5 million annually.
The former headteacher raised alarm over a projected 30% rise in costs, equivalent to £2 million extra per year, potentially affecting the budget for teaching positions. He criticized the Department for Education’s forecast of a 1.9% rise in non-salary expenses over the next two years as unrealistic.
Recently, the National Education Union decided to proceed with a formal vote on industrial action regarding pay disputes, as they believe the proposed 6.5% pay increase over three years lacks full government funding and may burden school budgets. The union leaders are set to determine the voting timeline, potentially leading to strike actions.
Campbell, writing for TES, pointed out the changing landscape for teacher pay post the Iran conflict, highlighting the impact of potential inflation on real-terms pay cuts. He advised headteachers to analyze staffing costs under varying inflation scenarios and prepare for the repercussions of escalating fuel costs, cautioning that it could have severe financial implications.
