Ryanair criticizes a new aviation tax recently enforced in a popular vacation destination and is pushing for its removal to enhance tourism.
Austria, known for its picturesque landscapes featuring snow-capped mountains, serene lakes, lush forests, and charming villages, attracts numerous British tourists to cities like Vienna, Salzburg, and Hallstatt.
Ryanair voiced concerns over a €12 (£10.39) aviation tax implemented in Austria, stating it could have detrimental effects on airlines and travel to the region. The airline suggested that this tax might lead to airlines like Wizz Air, Level, and easyJet pulling out of Austria, although these airlines have not officially commented on this matter.
Ryanair highlighted that major Austrian airlines, AUA and Ryanair, have downsized operations and terminated routes, opting to focus on more cost-effective neighboring countries such as Albania, Italy, and Slovakia. Despite Ryanair’s substantial profits, the airline strongly opposes various aviation taxes.
Ryanair demanded the Austrian government to revoke the €12 aviation tax by May 1, citing concerns about a potential decline in airline services and traffic at Austrian airports. The airline pointed out that neighboring countries like Albania, Italy, and Slovakia have abolished aviation taxes and reduced airport costs to attract airlines.
The airline warned that unless the €12 aviation tax is eliminated, Ryanair may reconsider investing in Austria. They revealed plans for a $1 billion (£740 million) growth initiative, including deploying 10 new B737 aircraft in Vienna, which could potentially increase passenger traffic by 70% within five years.
While Ryanair critiques the aviation tax, the aviation industry benefits from exemptions such as no fuel duty on jet fuel and VAT. This tax-free status has contributed to increased air travel demand and a rise in CO2 emissions, contrasting with other transport sectors.
In a statement released on April 21, Ryanair’s CEO, Michael O’Leary, urged Austrian authorities to scrap the €12 tax, emphasizing the need for competitive pricing to attract airlines and foster growth in the aviation sector. The airline emphasized the urgency for Austria to reform its tax policies to remain competitive in the aviation industry.
