Fashion accessories retailer Claire’s has shuttered its 154 stores in the UK and Ireland, resulting in approximately 1,300 job losses as confirmed by administrators. Kroll, the administrators, disclosed that all remaining outlets of the chain have ceased operations, leading to staff being informed of their redundancies. However, concession outlets and European stores under Claire’s continue to operate at present.
The acquisition of 156 Claire’s stores in the UK and Ireland was made by Mayfair financiers Modella Capital, who took over WH Smith’s high street division in September last year. Despite acknowledging the likelihood of store closures and job cuts, Modella Capital emphasized the potential to salvage over 1,000 jobs in the region that would otherwise have been lost.
Just a few months after this acquisition, in January of this year, the UK segment of Claire’s collapsed into administration. Modella Capital attributed this downturn to challenging retail conditions exacerbated by governmental policies, affecting British businesses like Claire’s significantly.
Amidst these developments, concerns have arisen regarding TJ Jones, the rebranded WH Smith high street business, amidst reports suggesting an imminent restructuring that may entail numerous store closures.
It is worth noting that the closure of Claire’s stores does not impact its 356 concessions, including those within Asda stores, as well as its headquarters. Fashion expert Priya Raj highlighted a shift in consumer preferences away from Claire’s traditional colorful and novelty jewelry towards more minimal and curated styles influenced by mainstream trends and social media.
Recent reports have indicated the closure of several Claire’s stores in various locations such as Cheshire Oaks, Sutton Coldfield, Stockport, Watford, and Bangor.
