In a tragic incident in Louisiana, a total of eight children were victims of a mass shooting, with one child found deceased on a rooftop while attempting to flee the violence, as reported by the police.
The perpetrator, identified as 31-year-old Shamar Elkins, an army veteran, allegedly carried out the dreadful attacks across three different locations in Shreveport around 6 am Central Time. The victims’ ages ranged from 1 to 12 years old, leaving attendees at a press conference visibly shocked by the heartbreaking news.
According to Shreveport Police Department Corporal Chris Bordelon, the crime scene spanned three properties in the Cedar Grove area. Elkins, after the incident, engaged in a carjacking and attempted to escape, leading to a confrontation with patrol officers, resulting in his fatal shooting by the police.
Corporal Bordelon revealed that seven children were tragically found deceased inside a second house, while one child was discovered on the roof, presumably in an attempt to escape the violence. The relationship between the child on the roof and Elkins remains unclear at this stage.
State Representative Tammy Phelps mentioned that some children tried to flee through the rear exit, underscoring the challenging situation faced by first responders and law enforcement during the incident.
Officials confirmed that two women sustained critical injuries and were in a precarious condition.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and US House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed their deep sorrow in separate statements and commended law enforcement for their swift response. Mr. Johnson extended thoughts and prayers to the victims, their families, and the Shreveport community during this tragic time.
While the motive behind the violence remains unknown, investigators suggested that it was likely a domestic-related incident. This incident marked the deadliest mass shooting in the U.S. since January 2024, underscoring the severity of the tragedy.
