“Community Rallies for Young Man’s £21K Care Fund”

Date:

The loved ones of a young man from Lanarkshire who experienced a life-altering brain injury at the age of 17 have successfully raised over £21,000 to support his care.

Debbie Dixon shared that her son, Daniel, now 22, was known as the “class clown” before a tragic incident in 2020 when he was hit by a car while cycling home to Blantyre from his girlfriend’s place at a speed of 60 miles per hour. The mother of three recounted the moment when police arrived at their door at 3 am, expressing her initial confusion thinking about Daniel’s usual teenage antics.

Debbie and Thomas, Daniel’s father, were shocked to discover that their son had been admitted to the head injury unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital after the severe collision with the car.

Reflecting on the seriousness of the situation, Debbie mentioned that the gravity of Daniel’s condition only sank in when she reached the hospital. She described the impact as a direct collision to his head, resulting in no other bodily injuries aside from the significant head trauma.

Doctors had to keep Daniel’s face covered due to the severity of his injuries, asking Debbie to identify him through his tattoos. Despite the traumatic experience, Debbie was relieved that Daniel’s physical appearance was not as severe as expected.

The road to recovery was fraught with uncertainty as Daniel’s life hung in the balance, with doctors cautioning his family about the slim chances of survival. Despite numerous surgeries, including the removal of a large portion of his skull to alleviate brain swelling, Daniel persevered.

Debbie disclosed that Daniel’s skull was temporarily stored in his abdomen to preserve the bone structure, resulting in a noticeable bulge resembling a “baby bump.” Although he also battled meningitis post-injury, Daniel’s ability to communicate has been severely impaired, relying solely on caregivers for his daily needs.

Grateful for the progress made, Debbie highlighted the small but significant signs of improvement, such as Daniel responding with fist bumps, smiles, and laughter, all attributed to his dedicated care team.

Following the accident, Daniel was cared for at Hairmyres Hospital for an extended period, receiving specialized attention due to his complex medical needs. However, due to his “unrehabilitatable” status, his family faced challenges in providing suitable care at home.

After extensive deliberations and efforts to find appropriate housing options, the family secured a suitable residence in Hamilton, where Daniel has been receiving round-the-clock care.

Despite the financial strain of supporting Daniel’s care, particularly the costly specialist physiotherapy sessions, the family remains dedicated to his well-being. Fundraising initiatives, including a recent event that raised £21,000, have been instrumental in covering these expenses.

Organized by family friends at Balls of Thunder, the fundraising event brought together hundreds of supporters who contributed towards Daniel’s care. Debbie expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support and generosity shown towards her son.

The funds raised will primarily go towards Daniel’s ongoing physiotherapy and essential equipment, such as a new shower chair. Additionally, the family hopes to provide Daniel with enriching experiences, including a potential trip to Amsterdam, acknowledging the financial challenges involved in planning accessible holidays due to his mobility needs.

Debbie’s advocacy extends to promoting cycling safety, emphasizing the importance of wearing helmets and bright clothing for visibility on the roads. She remains committed to raising awareness about the risks associated with cycling accidents to prevent similar tragedies.

The family’s unwavering determination and the community’s support have been crucial in Daniel’s journey of recovery, offering hope and comfort in the face of adversity.
