“Deputy PM Lammy Dispels Trump’s Criticism, Affirms UK-US Bond”

Date:

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy has expressed confidence in the public’s ability to see through Donald Trump’s repeated criticisms of Keir Starmer while affirming the strength of the special relationship between the UK and the US.

Lammy noted that President Trump’s recent attacks on the Prime Minister were likely aimed at influencing UK’s stance on the Iran conflict but emphasized that these actions did not diminish the strong historical ties between the two countries. Despite Trump’s negative comments about the special relationship, Lammy, a former Foreign Secretary, dismissed suggestions that the bond was facing significant strain.

During a conversation with the Mirror while on a visit to the Gulf, Lammy highlighted the tangible aspects of the special relationship, including robust military partnerships, extensive intelligence sharing, substantial economic investments, and deep cultural connections between the UK and the US.

Regarding Trump’s critical remarks towards the UK, Lammy pointed out that British citizens were adept at recognizing the President’s rhetorical tactics and understood his attempts to pressure the Prime Minister into altering his position on certain issues. Lammy reiterated that the UK was not involved in the conflict being referenced.

Lammy also mentioned his positive rapport with US Vice President JD Vance and their discussions on international matters, such as the situation in the Middle East, particularly focusing on efforts to bring about a ceasefire and address conflicts in regions like Ukraine.

As Lammy engaged in diplomatic visits to Oman and Kuwait, meeting with allies affected by Iran’s actions, he underscored the importance of maintaining pressure on Russia to prevent it from exploiting crises like the one in Iran for economic gain.

Meanwhile, Keir Starmer is gearing up to co-host a summit with world leaders in France to address the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz post-resolution of the Iran conflict. The Prime Minister is expected to advocate for the swift and unconditional reopening of the strait to facilitate global energy and trade flow.

The discussions and engagements come at a crucial time as global leaders work towards resolving conflicts and ensuring stability in key geopolitical regions.
