Kevin Pietersen has sparked a renewed dispute with former teammate Alastair Cook over Cook’s criticism of England cricketer Jacob Bethell’s choice to stay in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Bethell, who impressed in England’s defeat to Australia in the Ashes series, has not been utilized by Royal Challengers Bangalore after six IPL matches.
Cook advised the 22-year-old to return to England and compete in the County Championship rather than being inactive in the IPL. However, Pietersen, who clashed with Cook in the past and was removed from the England team in 2014, defended Bethell’s decision. Pietersen argued that Cook lacks an understanding of the IPL environment and the benefits it offers to young players like Bethell.
In a separate statement, Pietersen expressed that if English county cricket was as strong as in the past, he too would prefer Bethell playing there. Nonetheless, Pietersen believes Bethell’s development in India will ultimately benefit English cricket.
The ongoing debate reflects the longstanding tension between Pietersen and Cook stemming from Pietersen’s exclusion from the England team due to disciplinary issues. Cook has acknowledged regrets about the handling of Pietersen’s removal from the squad.
As for Bethell, despite his limited appearances in last year’s IPL, he remains committed to his decision to stay in India, citing the valuable experience and exposure he gains from playing in the IPL. Bethell emphasized that his time in India has significantly improved his skills and confidence.
