Dorothy Cook provided dedicated care for her husband, Melvin, for nearly five decades after he was diagnosed with a rare brain condition. However, a doctor declined to release him from the hospital due to the absence of a power of attorney, leaving Dorothy feeling helpless.
A power of attorney is a legal instrument that authorizes a trusted individual to make financial, property, or health decisions on behalf of another person. Dorothy, a 68-year-old from Bristol with a background in occupational psychology and entrepreneurship, transitioned to full-time caregiving for Melvin, who suffered from ataxia, a progressive brain disorder affecting mobility and communication.
During a hospital stay in March 2025, a physician determined that Melvin lacked mental capacity, partly due to communication challenges. Dorothy, who was not present during the evaluation, later demonstrated her ability to care for Melvin effectively, allowing his discharge.
Following Melvin’s passing at the age of 78 in June 2025, Dorothy shared her experience to highlight the significance of power of attorney on the inaugural UK-wide Power of Attorney Day. She emphasized the importance of setting up power of attorney promptly to avoid distressing situations like hers and Melvin’s.
Despite initial difficulties, Dorothy established power of attorney after Melvin’s discharge and encourages others to follow suit. Carers UK and Standard Life partnered to launch the UK’s first Power of Attorney Day, aiming to raise awareness, as statistics reveal that only a small fraction of adults have an updated power of attorney in place.
Helen Walker, Carers UK’s Chief Executive, stressed the importance of planning for unforeseen circumstances, urging carers and their families to discuss and establish power of attorney preemptively. Claire Hawkins, Director at Standard Life, highlighted the protective role of power of attorney in managing finances during unexpected events, preventing delays in accessing essential resources.
The initiative seeks to empower individuals to make informed decisions and safeguard their interests, underscoring the necessity of proactive legal preparations for the future.
