An elderly man facing financial difficulties was sentenced to seven years in prison after robbing a 95-year-old woman in her home to help cover his funeral expenses. Edwin Morrison, an 81-year-old retired pharmacy courier, entered the woman’s house under false pretenses, claiming to discuss a mundane topic like bin collection. Once inside, he forcibly demanded money from the woman while choking her and attempting to restrain her with zip ties.
Morrison’s failed robbery attempt was interrupted by the unexpected arrival of the woman’s mobile hairdresser, preventing him from leaving with any stolen items. Court proceedings revealed that Morrison’s initial intention was to use the stolen money to purchase a new kitchen for his partner before taking his own life, as he struggled with financial burdens and health issues.
Prior to the incident, Morrison had set up a GoFundMe page seeking financial assistance for his funeral costs due to his terminal illness and financial constraints. His desperation led him to target the vulnerable victim, whom he had previously encountered during his work as a medication delivery driver. Despite his lack of criminal history, Morrison’s actions were driven by a combination of depression and desperation, as he felt burdened by his impending financial obligations.
During the sentencing, Morrison’s defense lawyer emphasized his client’s remorse and claimed that his intentions were misguided rather than malicious. The victim, traumatized by the incident, expressed her fear of imminent harm during the robbery attempt. The timely intervention of the hairdresser prevented further harm, leading to Morrison’s arrest shortly after the incident.
Following his guilty plea to attempted robbery, Morrison’s other charges of false imprisonment and intentional strangulation were set aside.
