Spain seeks China’s assistance following a dispute with Donald Trump. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez urges Chinese President Xi Jinping to play a crucial role in resolving conflicts in the Middle East, particularly the ongoing war in Iran. Sánchez emphasized China’s unique global influence in bringing an end to conflicts, including in countries like Ukraine.
During a visit to Beijing, Sánchez expressed his belief that China is the primary power capable of facilitating peace in Iran and addressing issues in the Strait of Hormuz. This appeal to China comes after Trump’s threat to halt all trade with Spain due to its refusal to support military actions against Iran.
Trump criticized Spain for opposing U.S. and Israel’s military actions in Iran, calling them unjustified and a breach of international law. The strained relations between the two nations escalated further as Spain resisted Trump’s demands for increased defense spending by NATO allies.
In a recent statement, Trump revealed China’s agreement to refrain from sending weapons to Iran, citing mutual cooperation in managing operations in the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. president expressed satisfaction with China’s support and emphasized the importance of collaboration over conflict.
Meanwhile, Xi Jinping highlighted the deteriorating global order, remarking on the chaos ensuing from Iran’s threats to block the Red Sea in response to the U.S. blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The American military reported zero vessel crossings in the initial 24 hours of the blockade, with one ship compelled to turn back, underscoring the escalating tensions in the region.
During discussions with Sánchez in Beijing, Xi Jinping underscored the prevailing disorder in the international arena, emphasizing the need for concerted efforts to address the escalating conflicts and restore stability.
