Two police officers are facing charges related to the tragic incident that led to the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child in London. The 38-year-old woman lost her life in a collision with an unmarked police car on Eltham Road on October 17, 2024. Despite efforts, the unborn baby could not be saved, passing away at the scene, while the woman succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.
PC Chris Johnson, 56, has been accused of causing death by dangerous driving, while former PC Danny Tomkins, 35, faces charges of dangerous driving. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) initiated an investigation following the fatal accident that led to these charges.
PC Johnson serves in the Metropolitan Police Taskforce, and former PC Tomkins was part of the same unit during the incident. Both officers are scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, May 28.
Acting Detective Chief Superintendent James Derham, responsible for policing in Greenwich, expressed condolences to the woman’s family and friends grieving the loss. He described the incident as tragic and heartbreaking. Derham acknowledged the thorough investigation by the IOPC and emphasized the importance of avoiding comments that could influence the upcoming court proceedings.
