Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister, has pledged unwavering support for the people of Britain as the restrictive two-child benefit policy is lifted. This change, effective starting Monday, is expected to lift approximately half a million children out of poverty, a move that Starmer proudly emphasized.
Acknowledging the concerns families have regarding the cost of living, Starmer reiterated his commitment to prioritizing the welfare of British citizens. He expressed confidence in the government’s decisions to address long-term challenges amidst global uncertainties.
In his statement, Starmer declared, “Regardless of global instability, my administration will consistently prioritize reducing the cost of living for the British public.” He emphasized the government’s focus on responding to the needs of the populace and highlighted the significance of lifting children out of poverty, enhancing support for pensioners, and advancing workers’ rights.
In light of international tensions, particularly in Iran, Starmer assured that efforts were underway to collaborate with global partners to ease pressure on the cost of living. He emphasized the importance of seeking de-escalation in the Middle East and reopening the Strait of Hormuz to alleviate economic strains.
Regarding the two-child limit policy initially implemented by the Tories, which restricted benefits like Universal Credit to the first two children in a family, the lifting of this restriction is set to benefit around 1.5 million children. Additionally, the standard rate of Universal Credit is increasing by 6.2%, providing extra financial support to recipients.
Reacting to the government’s actions, Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey criticized the approach, accusing Labour of imposing higher taxes on families and businesses without adequately addressing the cost-of-living crisis. Davey urged the Prime Minister to consider alternative measures, such as a 10p cut in fuel duty, to mitigate the impact on families and pensioners facing potential energy bill hikes.
