“FCDO Updates Entry Rules for Brits Traveling to Portugal”

Date:

The FCDO has provided guidance for British travelers heading to Portugal. The Foreign Office regularly updates travel advice to inform Brits about any potential risks or requirements when traveling globally. Recently, there was a change in the advice for those planning a trip to Portugal.

According to the recent update on March 20th, which remains relevant as of March 25th, the FCDO revised the entry rules for Brits traveling to Portugal, a sought-after European destination known for its beautiful beaches and lively cities. The government specified that individuals staying in Portugal for more than 90 days within a 180-day period and needing an extension due to exceptional circumstances must take specific steps.

If travelers in Portugal require an extension for reasons such as a medical emergency, they must apply to AIMA using the designated contact form, which is only accessible to users within Portugal. However, if visitors are in Portugal with a residence permit or a long-stay visa, this duration does not count toward the 90-day visa-free limit.

British passport holders can currently visit Portugal without a visa for up to 90 days within a 180-day period for various purposes such as tourism, business meetings, or short-term studies. This rule also extends to Brits visiting the Schengen area, which includes 29 European countries where travelers can stay visa-free for up to 90 days in a 180-day period.

Travelers should ensure that their entire visit to Schengen countries falls within the 90-day visa-free limit to avoid potential entry bans. Moreover, starting from April 10, 2026, the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) is anticipated to be fully operational, requiring travelers to register their biometric details upon entry into the Schengen area.

In addition to visa requirements, Brits traveling to the Schengen area must meet specific passport criteria. Failure to comply with these requirements could lead to denial of entry. Passport renewals or replacements can be done online through the government website.

It is advisable for British travelers to renew or replace their passports promptly, as processing times can take up to three weeks or longer, especially during peak travel seasons. For more details on Portugal’s entry rules, individuals can refer to the government’s foreign travel advice page.
