Former President Donald Trump has issued a warning of imposing hefty tariffs on any nation that provides military weapons to Iran, although his authority to enforce such tariffs is questionable. Trump made this declaration on his Truth Social platform, stating that a 50% tariff would be applied immediately on all goods sold to the United States by countries supplying military weaponry to Iran without any exceptions.
However, back in February, the Supreme Court ruled against Trump’s ability to unilaterally impose tariffs, deeming it unlawful to bypass Congress using emergency powers to implement blanket tariffs worldwide.
A two-week ceasefire agreement was reached among Iran, the United States, and Israel last night, thwarting Trump’s threat of initiating a bombing campaign to obliterate Iranian civilization. Despite the ceasefire, reports emerged of new attacks by Iran and Gulf Arab countries shortly after the announcement, casting doubt on the stability of the agreement termed “fragile” by Vice President JD Vance.
The terms of the truce were contested, with both the US and Iran claiming victory. Iran stipulated strict conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz under their supervision. Trump initially praised a supposed 10-point plan proposed by Iran to end the conflict but later dismissed it as fraudulent when details emerged indicating Iran’s intent to continue enriching uranium, a critical component for nuclear weapons.
Iran’s demands to end the conflict include the withdrawal of US forces from the region, lifting sanctions, and releasing frozen assets. Trump hinted at discussing tariff and sanctions relief with Iran, although the acceptance of such terms by Western nations remains uncertain.
Efforts to negotiate a permanent end to the war could commence in Islamabad, Pakistan, as early as Friday, according to Pakistani sources. Israel supported the ceasefire with Iran, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu clarified that the agreement excludes combat with Hezbollah, with Israel’s military confirming ongoing operations against the group.
The ceasefire announcement led to a decline in oil prices, albeit still higher than pre-war levels, reflecting persistent uncertainty regarding the conflict. Despite US and Israeli strikes against Iran, concerns persist over Tehran’s nuclear program, ballistic missiles, and support for proxies like Hezbollah, cited as primary reasons for engaging in the conflict.
Trump mentioned plans to retrieve buried enriched uranium with joint US-Israeli strikes in June, signaling a challenging operation ahead. Iran has not confirmed this plan. The ceasefire could legitimize Iran’s fee-charging system in the Strait of Hormuz, potentially altering international transit norms and revenue streams in the region.
Tensions escalated post-ceasefire with reported missile warnings from Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, followed by attacks on Iran’s oil refinery on Lavan Island. The conflict has taken a toll on human lives, with casualties in Iran, Lebanon, Gulf Arab states, the West Bank, Israel, and among US service members.
