A university student identified as Jamie Collins, 21, was reportedly fatally stabbed at his residence in Filton. Emergency services responded to a call early Thursday morning and discovered Collins in the garden of his shared house on Cleve Road. According to a spokesperson from Avon and Somerset Police, a post-mortem examination revealed multiple stab wounds on the victim.
Authorities have announced that Jamie’s 23-year-old housemate, Zack Coughlan, has been arrested and charged with murder. Detective Chief Inspector Lucy Edgeworth of the Major Crime Investigation Team confirmed the murder charge against Coughlan, stating that the formal identification process is pending but Jamie’s name has been disclosed with the family’s consent for legal proceedings.
Coughlan is currently in custody and is scheduled to appear at Bristol Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, April 14. Det Ch Insp Edgeworth expressed sympathy for Jamie’s family during this challenging time and assured that support and updates are being provided by specially-trained officers. The privacy of the family is being requested to be respected.
The police official mentioned that individuals who knew Jamie are likely to be deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic incident. Neighbourhood officers have increased patrols in the area and are collaborating with the University of the West of England to offer necessary support. Further investigations are planned in the vicinity of Cleve Road in the upcoming days.
