Steve Cram, a co-commentator for BBC, has urged Winter Olympic officials to address the Canada curling team regarding their use of inappropriate language after defeating Team GB 9-5.
The Brad Jacobs-led Canadian team has faced controversy during the events in Milan and Cortina. A previous incident involving Canada’s Marc Kennedy engaging in a heated exchange with Swedish player Oskar Eriksson led to the BBC issuing an apology.
Kennedy was also accused of violating rules by allegedly double-touching a stone during a match against Sweden, prompting World Curling to release a statement clarifying the regulations. Despite this, the BBC commentary team criticized the Canadians for their language once more.
During a break in the recent match, the Canadian team was heard using profanity near TV cameras, causing disapproval from Cram and co-commentator Logan Gray.
Following a Canadian team member’s explicit remarks upon scoring a point, Cram expressed his irritation, emphasizing the need for officials to address the issue with the Canadians. Gray commented on the team’s inappropriate language as well.
At that stage, Canada had a 3-1 lead after the third end, a crucial moment as Jacobs’ team capitalized on the hammer to secure a point against Mouat’s team.
Despite not being televised or within microphone range, Mouat’s team may now be expressing frustration. Although Mouat guided Team GB to the Olympic silver medal in the 2022 Games, the recent loss to Canada presents a challenge for their semi-final aspirations.
After suffering an 8-6 defeat to Norway in their previous round-robin match, Team GB’s match against Canada became even more crucial. Winning against both Canada and the USA, their upcoming opponent, is necessary to secure a spot in Thursday’s semi-final.
Even with a victory over the Americans, Team GB’s chances of reaching the semi-finals remain uncertain. They must rely on favorable outcomes in other matches to advance further in the competition.
