“UK Delays Chagos Islands Deal Amid Trump Dispute”

Date:

The UK is currently addressing issues with Donald Trump regarding the Chagos Islands agreement, as stated by a senior minister.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting acknowledged a change in Washington’s stance after the US initially supported the deal.

Despite Mr. Trump’s previous endorsement of the agreement, he reversed his position in January, criticizing the transfer of sovereignty as “an act of GREAT STUPIDITY” on social media.

Due to the lack of formal approval from the US and limited time before the parliamentary session concludes, the UK has put the plans on hold.

It is unlikely that a new Chagos bill will be included in the upcoming King’s Speech. Officials maintain that the deal has not been completely abandoned.

When asked if the Chagos deal was off the table, Mr. Streeting emphasized ongoing discussions with the US, highlighting the shared British and American interests in securing the Chagos Islands for the long term.

The proposed agreement entailed transferring the Chagos Islands, including the strategically important UK-US military base on Diego Garcia, to Mauritius. The UK would have paid an annual average of £101 million to lease back the base.

Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch have vehemently opposed the deal, pressuring the Government to abandon it.

Responding to critics, Mr. Streeting criticized the Conservatives for their shifting stance on the deal and condemned Mr. Farage’s actions, questioning his patriotism.

The Conservative Party and Reform UK welcomed the decision to shelve the deal.

Former Foreign Office permanent secretary Lord Simon McDonald explained on BBC Radio 4 that the government had to suspend the deal due to the openly hostile stance of the US president, emphasizing the importance of complying with international law and strengthening the UK-US relationship.

The agreement is now on hold until further notice, given the current circumstances.
