Parents at Gateacre School in Liverpool are expressing strong disapproval of a new policy that restricts students from using the restroom during class time. The school administration issued a notice over the weekend outlining various guidelines for students’ return from the Easter break, including required equipment, arrival protocols, and expectations regarding attendance and punctuality.
Of particular concern to parents and caregivers is the school’s directive that students are only permitted to utilize restroom facilities before school, during breaks, at lunchtime, and after school, but not during instructional periods. The rationale behind this decision, according to the notice, is to maintain student focus and engagement during lessons by offering designated times and spaces for restroom breaks.
While acknowledging that some students may need to leave class for urgent restroom visits, the school ensures support is available, including medical passes for those with specific needs. However, students who leave class are required to make up missed content to ensure academic progress and engagement with the curriculum.
In a plea for parental cooperation, the school emphasizes the importance of encouraging students to utilize restroom facilities outside of class time whenever feasible to develop good time-management habits and avoid missing key instructional content or class discussions.
Parents have voiced strong objections to the policy, with concerns raised about the potential impact on students, particularly regarding anxiety levels and logistical challenges, especially for female students. The school has also announced the allocation of specific restroom facilities to different year groups, with staff supervision during operating hours.
Additionally, the school’s information pack to parents includes a ban on mobile phone use during school hours, with consequences outlined for violations. Attendance and punctuality are highlighted as key priorities, with late students facing same-day after-school detentions for tardiness.
This recent policy is not the first controversy involving Gateacre School and its headteacher Nabil Jamil, with past disputes over disciplinary practices. The school is part of the Northern Schools Trust, and inquiries have been made to the trust for their response.
